Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival
Antalya is home to many cultural activities and festivals. One of the most important of these is the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. In the mid-1950s, concerts and theaters started to be organized at the Aspendos theater, formed the starting point of the festival. The festival, which was firstly held in 1964, welcomes famous faces and filmmakers of Turkish and world cinema until the present time every fall.
International Antalya Film Festival is a film festival held in Antalya since 1964. Its name before 2015 is International Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. This festival, which is the most important film festival in Turkey, is organized every fall season with the contributions of Antalya Metropolitan Municipality.
The date of the festival is based on 1950. Base of many of the events organized for in Antalya for many years were based in Aspendos Theater in 1950. The restoration of Aspendos Theater in Antalya was come true thanks to Atatürk. 2 years after Atatürk said, “Repair this theater, but don’t close down it.” here was partly repaired and wrestling was organized here, donated to charitable organizations. Later, helding wrestling for charities in Aspendos Theater has became a tradition.
In the mid-1950s, the concerts and theaters that started to be organized in the historical Aspendos Theater constitute the foundation stone of the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. The shows which the public show a lot of interest and is held every year in the summer, have become traditional and continue until the beginning of the 60’s in a festive mood. The festival has changed as “Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival” with Avni Tolunay‘s being the Mayor of 1963. Dr. Avni Tolunay first searches for an emblem for Antalya and integrates the orange, the symbol of the region, with sea, historical artifacts and Venus statue. Orange does not just be added to the emblem, it become the name of the film festival.
