Seaside History: Çeşme Museum
One of the historical and cultural values of the Çeşme District is the Çeşme Museum. Çeşme Museum is located in the castle built in 1508 during the period of Sultan Beyazıt II .
It was built by architect Mehmet the son of Ahmet with the order of Aydin Governor Mir Haydar. Çeşme Archeology Museum is located in the castle which reached the present time by being preserved.
Çeşme Museum was opened for visitings for the first time in 1965 as a gun museum with weapons brought from Istanbul Topkapi Museum and continued until 1984. When the weapons in the museum began to deteriorate due to excessive moisture, They where transferred to İzmir Archeology and Ödemiş Museums. The same exhibition hall was arranged and the works obtained from the recovery excavations in the ancient city of Ildiri (Erythrai), which has been going on since 1964, are on display.
The sculptures of god and goddess made from terracotta, busts, marble sculptures, silver and works such as bronze coins, gold leaf, amphoras are exhibited.
The city walls are at the top of the visible remains of Ildırı (Erythrai). In addition to this, the church built in the Byzantine period, the Hellenistic and Roman period villa buildings, the Athena temple of the Archaic Period, the Roman villa and mosaics in the place called Cennettepe, have appeared in the excavations made in acropolis and the theater in the north and in the north of the acropolis. There are military and civilian structures unearthed as a result of excavations and investigations in the ancient city of Ildiri (Erythrai).
